My Portfolio and Self-Assesment Evaluation

Briana Elome

This course has taught me about science writing. Prior to this course, I did not have the knowledge of different writing styles for science. Learning this in the beginning of the course caused me to write drafts, editing multiple times and finally coming down to well written assignments and papers. In class we learned different ways we can phrase our sentences to make them be a more intellectual read. This caused me to go over the words that I would use and find synonyms to make my writing more sound. I did this for my position paper, my COVID-19 alternative paper, etc. There is a significant difference shown from my introductory paper to my position paper, being that I have grown and improved as a writer. Though science writing was new to me, this was my focus for all of my assignments. Therefore, I did not work on writing in different genre styles. In my position paper, I had to take a stance on a topic and choose articles that both supported and went against my claim. Using the CCNY database to find different scholarly articles to formulate my stance in my paper was hard work. Finding the right databases, choosing the right articles and effectively reading through them is an area that I improved in. I learned how to do those things due to this course giving assignments that required that. Though I failed to complete my literature review due to difficult times, I had this experience with my position paper. Using the right quotations from the articles I chose was another area I grew in. It made me actively read the articles to find my supporting evidence instead of simply skimming through it. Overall, I have improved as a writer in areas such as science writing and using scholarly articles. In this site, there are many assignments of mine available above to read and review.
